Alternative Model: Makita DGA517Z 18V Cordless Angle Grinder with Paddle Switch and Variable Speed (Body Only)
The Makita DGA517Z is a strong alternative for users who prefer a paddle switch for added safety. Like the DGA513Z, the DGA517Z operates on the Makita 18V battery platform, features a 125mm disc size, and includes variable speed control for versatility across different materials and applications. However, the primary difference lies in the switch type. The DGA513Z uses a slide switch that can be locked into the “on” position, allowing for continuous operation without needing to hold the switch, which is convenient for extended tasks but requires caution for safe handling. The DGA517Z, by contrast, has a paddle switch that requires continuous pressure to operate and shuts off immediately when released, offering enhanced safety in high-risk applications by enabling quick shutdown.
Both models deliver the trusted Makita quality, with the DGA513Z offering the convenience of a slide switch for prolonged tasks, and the DGA517Z providing the added safety of a paddle switch for situations where immediate shutdown capability is essential.
An introduction to angle grinders: Angle grinders have a wide variety of uses amongst, for example, engineers, stone masons, welders, bricklayers & scaffolders. The grinding disc is mounted on a head which sits at right angles to the motor's drive shaft. They are occasionally referred to as disc or side grinders. Cordless angle grinders are concentrated at the smaller disc diameter end of this range. Click here to see all our grinders
To choose between angle grinders: Disc diameter is the key choice to make when selecting an angle grinder. They range in disc diameter size from 4' (100mm) - 9' (230mm) with the 4.1/2' (115mm) & 9' (230mm) grinders being the most popular choices. Smaller grinders rotate the discs at a higher speed. These tools all have a 5' disc diameter. Click here to see all our angle grinders
To make sure you've got the right angle grinder - 5' (125mm): Choosing the right battery: Cordless (or battery powered) tools have various chemical battery types; Li-ion is the latest technology, prior to that it was Ni-MH and Ni-Cad was the original. The higher the Ah (Ampere hours) the longer the interval between charges; the fewer times you recharge a battery the longer it will last. Some cordless tools can also come without batteries - also referred to as naked, bare units or body only. These tools are supplied without a battery or charger and more often than not without any accessoires. As a result they are significantly cheaper in price.
