An introduction to combi drills: The combi drill combines a hammer action and drill driver function enabling drilling into concrete and brick as well as wood, metal or plastics. Combi drills are cordless; see percussion drills for their mains equivalent. Click here to see all our drills

To choose between combi drills: The key consideration when choosing a combi drill is the maximum drilling diameter required. 13mm refers to maximum drilling diameter in concrete & brick. You can use a larger drill bit for metal, plastic & wood (& some machines allow this in concrete & brick too) providing it has a 13mm or smaller diameter shank to fit the chuck. A keyless chuck is tightened by hand. Click here to see all our combi drills

To make sure you've got the right combi drill - 13mm keyless chuck: Choosing the right battery: Cordless (or battery powered) tools have various chemical battery types; Li-ion is the latest technology, prior to that it was Ni-MH and Ni-Cad was the original. The higher the Ah (Ampere hours) the longer the interval between charges; the fewer times you recharge a battery the longer it will last. Some cordless tools can also come without batteries - also referred to as naked, bare units or body only. These tools are supplied without a battery or charger and more often than not without any accessoires. As a result they are significantly cheaper in price.

Most professional combi drills have a variable speed function and a variety of torque settings. Additionally there is often a choice between single, 2 or 3 speed gears; a low speed and higher torque setting is used for screw driving whilst a higher speed is used for drilling metal or wood for example. Heavy a little bit, but if you're looking for power in combi-drill it's a MONSTER. There is a lot of other options on the market, but this one is a really nice toy. Made in Romania. High quality tool.

I did a lot of research before I bought this combi drill and after reading the reviews of the different models Makita sell I decided on the DHP481RTJ, previously I had the Dewalt DW997 with NiCad batteries and want something similar but better. I have quite a few Makita tools as they are very well made and have lasted years with no issues.

A mean machine with 115 nm of torque which is the highest I could find when making comparisons with other manufacturers it has lived up to my expectations and I feel I can tackle any DIY job that I choose as it has given me the confidence to tackle jobs that I might of had second thoughts about.

Early days but looks to be a well made product and you'd expect nothing less from Makita. Expensive. Kit box is quirky. Square as opposed to the usual rectangular boxes you get with drills and needs to be laid flat as opposed to on it's side. In reality not an issue for me.
